![]() ![]() This is largely promotional in nature, with little in the way of actual information, but kids will enjoy seeing the actors talk about their characters. There is also a 20-minute making-of segment featuring interviews with the all-star cast. The Blu-Ray version is a combo pack that also includes a DVD and digital copy.īonus features begin with audio commentary from director Cal Brunker. All in all, this makes for a solid Family Movie Night feature.Įscape from Planet Earth arrives on Blu-Ray (in 2D and 3D formats) and DVD on June 4. Perhaps most importantly, Escape from Planet Earth has a sweet message about the value of family that will appeal to children and adults alike. A chase scene in the second half is nicely animated, providing a touch of action. Visually, the film is pretty good, too, with bright colors and interestingly designed characters. That made me laugh, as did the subtle sci-fi movie references scattered throughout. He mistakes it for an alien signaling for help, which proves comically disastrous. When Scorch first arrives on Earth, he makes his way to a 7-11, where one of those inflatable men flaps in the breeze outside. There's a significant amount of wit at play here, with a number of jokes very cleverly conceived. However, the movie has something working strongly in its favor: it's funny. (A dopey mid-story food fight is a great example.) For that reason, it lacks the kind of magic found in the very best animated features. At times, it feels as though the movie is making itself up as it goes along. The plot in Escape from Planet Earth is not as tightly constructed as it might have been. Gary and Scorch must find a way to free all the captive beings and stop Shanker. What he discovers is that Shanker has been luring aliens to Earth as part of a nefarious scheme. Gary, sensing the chance to finally earn his kid's respect, sets out to rescue Scorch, against the advice of his wife, Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker). He arrives on Earth and is immediately captured, then shipped off to a containment center where other aliens are also being held by the deranged General Shanker (William Shatner). One day, Mission Control gets a distress signal from something they refer to as “the dark planet.” Scorch decides to send himself on a rescue mission. It breaks his heart that he isn't his own son's hero. Much to Gary's dismay, his son Kip (Jonathan Morgan Heit) idolizes Scorch. His brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), is the head of the planet's Mission Control, i.e. My score: 6.Escape from Planet Earth is an animated comedy about Scorch Supernova (voiced by Brendan Frasier), a famous and much-admired interplanetary traveler from the planet Baab. Although it's not perfect, I've seen much, much worse Recommended. I guess it's down to taste and I'm aware that we are all different, especially when it comes to comedy, but I urge you to give this one a chance. Over all I found it a very entertaining movie with quite a few laughs. Baker, Jessica Biel as Neera, Justin Long as Lem, Gary Oldman as General Grawl, Seann William Scott as Skiff and John Cleese as Professor Kipple. Honourable mentions go to the voice talents of Dwayne Johnson as Captain Charles T. The dialogue was adequately delivered, but then nobody was really stretched. My favourite character is the 'Alien' dog you'll know what I mean when/if you see it. As I said at the beginning, there are plenty of gags incorporated into the script and there's also a lot of slapstick. Can Lem and his friends get him back to his Lander in time? Will Baker help Lem with Neera? Is there any end to these crazy questions? Guess you'll have to wait and see. Time is running out for Baker, his command craft, in orbit, leaves in 72 hours. Back with the mission, help is at hand in the form of R.O.V.E.R., an advance scout robot who was sent ahead of the mission. He is in love with Eckle's sister, Neera, but struggles with getting the right words out. A teenager, Lem, befriends Baker and, with the help of his friends, Skiff and Eckle, hides him from the army and their leader, General Grawl and the crazy scientist, Professor Kipple. Alien life forms with green skin inhabit this little planet and they have advanced as far as the 1950's, that's USA 1950's, just in case there's any doubt. Unfortunately for astronaut Captain Charles T. Planet 51 is supposed to be lifeless, well, that's what the data said anyway. But more of that later, first, here's a very brief summary (miss the next paragraph if you hate summaries). I admit it's not perfect, but I think it deserves another chance. What I found was a funny, engaging film with a whole load of gags referring to just about every mainstream sci-fi/alien film. I must admit I was shocked how poorly it has been received. As you may or may not know, I'm a bit of a sucker for an animated feature and, having seen the trailer for Planet 51 a while back I was keen to see how it turned out. ![]()
